Assessment day!

Today is our formative assessment day so I’ve cleaned my desk (finally!) and set my work out nicely.

This is what it’s turned out like:

Setting it out like this has made me realise how much (or little) I’ve done and how much time has been split between the two projects.

It also shows off my medal project as the more successful of the two. It’s stronger, more coherent and makes more sense!

Silicone moulds and wax casts…

This week I’ve been speeding along with my medal project by making small silicone moulds of my 3D prints. I decided to use silicone moulds for three reasons: One – it won’t warp or melt the print whilst making the mould. Two – the mould itself will take really high temperatures meaning I can cast pewter straight into the mould. Three – it will pick up all the detail on the print including the lines of the 3D printing process itself, and effect I wanted because the lines almost suggest mountainous contour lines seen on maps.
Moulds prepped for silicone:

The finished moulds:

I then cast them in beeswax to see how successful they were (very successful actually!) however I have the view of casting a range of materials in them: glass, resin, pewter, plastic and eventually casting wax so that I can make them into bronze outcomes. I’m looking forward to playing around with my now completed moulds and making new ones from more 3D prints.

Taking it one step further…

I’ve taken my medal project one step further this week though further developing the form of the medal and the general aesthetic. I have also planned the steps that I have to take to achieve this. The creative strategies I have use to develop my project are through design sheets and mark making. It’s made it easy to describe what I want to achieve in the aesthetic and form of the medal. Design sheet one:

Mark making sheet:

I’ve then developed these into 3D prints. The original mountainous texture was hacked from thingy verse but I aim to 3D scan some textures to work with in the future.

And they are designed to slot together perfectly.

The next step is to make a silicone mould of it and then experiment with different materials to cast it in.

Being bold with folds.

Just blitzing some ideas on some concertina books for our new “medal project”. Our brief is to create two medals under the title “The icon and the iconoclast” one embracing traditional skills, the other embracing digital techniques.

I’ve just started by drawing and sketching out concepts and ideas. Early stages but I think that my workings have become to look dynamic.
